¡Gracias Mallorca!
At Engel & Völkers Mallorca we understand just how fortunate we are to live in one of the most privileged areas of the Mediterranean with its beautiful climate, stunning coastline and landscapes including the island’s famous Sierra Tramuntana, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Helping protect Mallorca’s natural beauty is at the heart of the Engel & Völkers Mallorca social mission and is our way to say “thank you” to the island and everyone who lives here. Our management philosophy is to ensure an overall positive impact on society and the sustainable future development in Mallorca. It is therefore our mission to operate our business responsibly with the aim of conserving the island’s amazing beauty and environmental quality.

Ongoing projects:
-
Sustainable fishery
In the Balearic Islands, the fishing sector is increasing to implement measures to ensure that fishing is managed sustainably. This project aims to define possible guidelines and work with fishermen and consumers to create a seal of sustainability. -
Fighting plastic pollution
"Kilometres for Iris" is a joint project against plastic pollution with the Menorca Preservation and Ibiza Preservation, in memory of Iris Goldsmith, that aims to encourage young people to be active environmental warriors by finding solutions to plastic pollution on their island. -
Shark breeding
"Stellaris" – With great sucess and in alliance with the administration and other foundations, this project is breeding Nursehund sharks in captivity with a double objective; improving the status of this species and to raise awareness of their importance in the balance of marine ecosystems.
-
Marine fauna recovery
The "Marine Fauna Recovery Centre", part of Palma Aquarium's Foundation aims to contribute to biodiversity conservation, promote the recovery of threatened species, develop environmental education campaigns. Last year, they traeted more than 100 cetacean and turtle stranding's. -
Regenerative agriculture
Agriculture is the ONE sector that has the ability to transform from a net emitter of CO2 to a net sequester of CO2 . In order to achieve this challenge, and thanks to APAEMA, we are accompanying the farmers of mallorca for a transition towards regenerative agriculture.
Current projects:
-
Dolphin project (Cabrera National Park)
The objective is to study the bottlenose dolphin population in the Cabrera National Park. Acoustic techniques will be used to identify each dolphin according to its unique whistle, which will allow us to know the size of the population. In addition, how underwater noise affects these cetaceans will be analysed.
-
Sustainable fishing
In the Balearic Islands, the fishing sector is increasing to implement measures to ensure that fishing is managed sustainably. This project aims to define possible guidelines and work with fishermen and consumers to create a seal of sustainability.
-
"Stellaris" Shark breeding
The "Stellaris" project is an initiative of several foundations together with the administration. The main objectives are to increase the population of the endangered albatross and to raise awareness of its importance for the balance of marine ecosystems. Since 2021, 347 young of this species have developed in captivity to be released into the sea.
-
Biofilm project
This project arose from the need to reduce the use of plastics in agriculture. To this end, the traditional plastic mulch, used to optimise crop conditions, has been replaced by a 100% biodegradable alternative, made from potato starch. Around 900 linear km of plastic have been eliminated from 23 farms in Mallorca over the last six years.
-
Mallorca Produce
Initiative that encompasses and supports a variety of regenerative agriculture and local food production projects in Mallorca. The aim is to be a driving force in environmental preservation and the fight against climate change, helping the farmers of Mallorca to meet a clear challenge: to turn their agricultural activity from an emitter to a net CO2 sequestrator.

PLASTIC PREVENTION
We are joining the plastic prevention movement by the Cleanwave Foundation
The Cleanwave Foundation was founded by Line Hadsbjerg and Philipp Baier to reconnect people to nature and in response to the growing plastic crisis across the Balearic Islands, which threatens the fragile ecosystem. The initiative provides alternatives to single-use plastic, and has set up a network of water refill points and public fountains across the islands. The work of Cleanwave and others has produced concrete results and since March 2021 the Balearic Government has banned the sale of single-use plastic. Believing that the only way to change people’s minds is by touching their hearts Cleanwave Education is committed to providing eco-emotional workshops to schools and companies.
Engel & Völkers Mallorca also rides the wave towards a plastic free world together with Cleanwave. We have installed sustainable drinking water fountains and reusable eco-friendly bottles in our property shops on the island. This initiative means that thousands of plastic bottles will not enter the island's environment and many homeowners, plus future buyers, will experience modern and sustainable drinking water production.

CULTURE & HERITAGE
We are supporting local cultural events
Cultural events help to benefit local neighborhoods and support small businesses. In this way, they contribute to the economic well-being of a particular area. A social calendar of arts and cultural events is one of the top deciding factors people look for when moving to a new place.

the island we love

SOCIAL SUSTAINABILTIY
We keep reducing our carbon footprint and with local and social businesses
The planet's future lays in our hands. Only by combining our efforts we can achieve necessary change and Engel & Völkers Mallorca wants to contribute to a brighter, more sustainable future for us but foremost our children. Therefore we are constantly looking for ways to minimise our carbon footprint but also to increase any positive impact on climate and society. An overall and steady reduction of emissions became a natural part in our daily practise. Besides avoiding waste and the use of plastic we also seek to minimise printing in all our offices, even our marketing campaigns. We generally use carbon neutral shipping and opt for eco-friendly printing whenever offered, as we believe the benefits easily outweigh higher costs. We always prefer to work with local businesses which keeps transportation distances short and allows the islands’ people to become a part of the flourishing and increasingly sustainable economy on Mallorca. A great example is our continuous work with "Esment", a foundation that has built an entire network of various social projects and businesses – including a professional print shop run by people with disabilities, producing results of seamlessly high quality while reflecting the vision of a better, more inclusive world brought to reality.
